Stargrad:

The old castle played a strategic role in the past due to its location . He controlled an important ford across the Váh River in the Strečianska Strait. It was an important transition from the upper nature towards Turiec and Liptov. It was also a toll station. The first written mention comes from 1323, but it is mentioned indirectly already in 1235.

At the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries, the main Považ road led along the right side of Váh and Budatín. This was later changed and the road was moved to the other side of Váh. At that time, the new Strečno Castle was built and it gradually took over the function of the Varín Castle, which appears in documents under the name Starý hrad.

The location is significantly rich in tourist attractions . In addition to the Old Castle, there is also the Strečno Castle from a later period, which is in better condition, has a permanent exhibition, and various cultural events are held here. On the way to Starhrad, we will also have views of Strečno Castle , the river Váh, which in these places, thanks to its preserved form without human interference, is the home of our largest salmon-like fish, the Dunajská Hlavátka (some individuals can grow up to 1 m in length). We will also see the French Partisans Monument . Due to its strategic importance, the Strait of Strečia was an important activity of the partisans during the Second World War. The partisans from the Strečno area had been developing activities for a few days before August 29, 1944, which directly influenced the outbreak of the Slovak National Uprising. On the way to the castle, we can also see the flooded Nezbud , which in the past was the only quarry for extracting natural asphalt in Europe. On the other side of the river, which can be crossed on foot over the pedestrian bridge or by car for cars, it is possible to visit the Špičák lookout . A short distance above the castle, we can see the view of the famous Domašínsky meander . However, if we wish to go even further, a tourist route leads from Starhrad to Chata pod Suchým , which provides accommodation and meals in the lap of nature. Accommodation, meals and space for children are also provided by many restaurants directly in the village of Nezbudská Lúčka, through which we will pass.
